Having purchased similar items in the past, I thought that I knew exactly what I wanted. When I found the item on Amazon, I was quite happy until it showed up at our door. I took it out of the box only to find out that the unit had a 220V, 2-pin rounded (European) plug. Nowhere in the online ads could I find this detail. I just looked again and still cannot find this in their ads. When I complained to Amazon and ANTonline (the suplier) about the problem, all they could offer was for me to send the unit back. That's not a easy deal with a big, bulky item like this. I ended up purchasing a 220 "step-up" converter for about another $20 with shipping and now it works fine. I wish that I had known about this plug and voltage issue before making the purchase. We primarily run this during May/June when we seem to have the most problems with Allergies. By running it in our bedroom it seems to help and let us get a better night of rest. I have four of the round Honeywell thermostats in our house built in 2005, three for zone heat and one for A/C and zone heat (#T87F 2873 3). Ours has the mercury bubble unlike some of the newer ones that are mercury-free. None of them maintain the temperature settings very accurately. For instance there were times when the thermometer on the thermostat showed 3 degrees below the setting but the heat would not come on; at another time the temperature might be 3 degrees above the setting but the heat would not shut off. My main thermostat is off by about 6 degrees but that varies from time to time. Sometimes the heat or A/C comes on and goes off 6 degrees from the setting, other times it is just a couple degrees off. We had the builder replace the A/C thermostat but the replacement acts pretty much like the first one.

The list price of $70 (as seen on an Amazon seller site) for the non-electronic thermostat is very unreasonable. None of the parts are made of material worth more than a few cents. I may be showing my age but it doesn't seem like too long ago when the round thermostats sold for $5.

The round Honeywell thermostats do last a long time because there is hardly anything in them to go wrong. The electronic thermostats that I've had in former houses have nice features but seem to last only a couple years before malfunctioning. Lightning or power surges or poor design must do them in. I used this switch to replace an already installed intermatic switch that failed after one year of use. This is an excellent replacement. It has automatic settings for turning on at sunset and off at sunrise based on my longitude/latitude.

Unfortunately it does not have as much schedule flexibility as some intermatic switches - it requires the same settings for every day and doesn't have weekday or weekend settings. However, this wasn't a problem in my installation because I only require that the outdoor lights turn on at the same time every day. The timer works as most people have already discussed in their reviews, and is great because no other timer I have found will control compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL's). However, please be VERY careful wiring it. If you look at the wiring diagram enclosed, the connections are reversed: It shows line connected to load and vice versa. The directions as written in text are correct, but the two are not consistent with each other. I do not know what would happen if you reversed the wires. I am guessing the switch would either not work, or it could be damaged. Please be careful.

A distinction that should be clarified is that this TI070 model must have a load OVER 40 watts in order to function. If you are controlling CFL's (as I am) that is more than 3 bulbs since a 60W incandescent equivalent draws just 13 watts. I actually had to add a fourth bulb to bring the total load from 39 watts to 52 watts (slightly wasteful). However, the TI071 model can handle loads less than 40 watts according to the instructions. But, apparently that model requires a neutral wire, which the TI070 model does NOT.

So, to summarize:

TI070 model: Needs a load of at least 40 watts, does NOT need a neutral wire connection
TI071 model: Can handle a smaller load below 40 watts, DOES need a neutral wire connection

The timer works very well. I had an Intermatic before, but it didn't work with CFL bulbs. This worked perfectly. Make SURE you have a three wire box, and yes you need the third wire (it isn't just a ground wire)! The only complaint I have is that it doesn't have a setback option. On my old Intermatic, if you didn't want your lights to kick on at dusk, you could set back the time by any amount you wanted. So, if it gets dark 20 minutes after sundown, you could make the timer delay 20 minutes before turning on. This is not an option with the Aube. It goes of EXACTLY at sundown (although I understand a new version is now out which does have a setback feature - figures it would come out right after I bought the old one). However, you can fool it into delaying by picking coordinates that are further west than your actual location. Just note, if you go too far west and cross into a different time zone, the timer will adjust to the new time zone and set your timer off earlier instead of later. You can, of course, correct for this by using the one-hour offset feature (see the manual - for cities that don't follow daylight savings times), but it's starting to get complicated! The easier solution is to just set the timer's clock at the wrong time, so that the delay you want is the number of minutes by which you want the clock to be off. But then your clock will always be off and, personally, I don't like that even if I never look at it.
